Plot

The film begins in 1970, with a young Gru living in a suburban neighborhood with his mother Marlena. He is fascinated by supervillains and dreams of becoming one himself. He idolizes a group of notorious villains called the Vicious 6, led by Wild Knuckles. One day, he sees an advertisement for an audition to join the Vicious 6, as they have fired their previous member, Nunchuck. Gru decides to apply for the position, hoping to impress them with his inventions and skills.

Meanwhile, the Minions, who have been living in an underground lair since the dawn of time, are bored and restless. They long for a new master to serve and follow. They discover a hidden tunnel that leads them to the surface world, where they encounter Gru and his mother. The Minions are instantly drawn to Gru's villainous aura and decide to join him on his quest to become a supervillain.

Gru and the Minions arrive at the Vicious 6's headquarters, where they meet the other members: Belle Bottom, Jean Clawed, Stronghold, Svengeance, and Kung Fu. Gru presents himself as a candidate for their group, but they laugh at him and reject him. Wild Knuckles takes a liking to Gru's rocket bike and steals it from him. Gru retaliates by stealing Wild Knuckles' prized possession: a large ruby called the Vicious Stone. He escapes with the help of the Minions and his loyal dog Kyle.

The Vicious 6 are furious and vow to hunt down Gru and get their stone back. They enlist the help of Nunchuck, who has a personal grudge against Gru for taking his place. They also hire a bounty hunter named Tina Nelson to track him down.

Gru and the Minions return to their lair, where they celebrate their successful heist. Gru plans to use the Vicious Stone to power his ultimate weapon: a giant robot called Otto. He names his new villainous group "Gru's Minions" and designs a logo for them. He also gives each of the Minions a name: Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Dave, Jerry, Tim, Phil, Mark, Lance, Ken, Mike, Norbert, Tom, Carl, Josh, Donny, Chris, Paul, John, Steve, Larry, Eric, Scotty and Otto.

However, things go wrong when Otto accidentally swaps the Vicious Stone with a pet rock belonging to a young girl named Lucy Wilde. Lucy is an aspiring secret agent who works for an organization called AVL (Anti-Villain League). She is on her first mission to infiltrate the Vicious 6's lair and find out their plans. She mistakes Otto for a stuffed toy and takes him with her.

Gru realizes his mistake and sets out to find Otto and get the stone back. He is joined by Kevin, Stuart and Bob. They track down Lucy's address and break into her apartment. They find Otto there but are confronted by Lucy's parents Fred and Margie Wilde who are also AVL agents. They mistake Gru and the Minions for villains working for the Vicious 6 and capture them.

Meanwhile, Tina Nelson locates Gru's lair and informs the Vicious 6. They storm into the lair and take all of Gru's inventions and gadgets. They also kidnap the remaining Minions and Kyle. They torture them to find out where Gru is and what he did with the stone.

Gru and the Minions manage to escape from Lucy's parents and convince them that they are not enemies. They team up with Lucy and her parents to stop the Vicious 6. They learn that the Vicious 6 plan to use the Vicious Stone to power a giant laser cannon that can destroy anything in its path. They intend to use it to take over the world and eliminate all other villains.

Gru and the Minions infiltrate the Vicious 6's lair and fight their way through their henchmen. They reach the laser cannon and confront the Vicious 6. Gru challenges Wild Knuckles to a one-on-one duel, while the Minions battle the other members. Gru manages to defeat Wild Knuckles and reclaim his rocket bike. He then uses it to destroy the laser cannon and the Vicious Stone, foiling the Vicious 6's plans.

Gru and the Minions are hailed as heroes by the AVL and are offered to join them as agents. Gru declines, saying that he prefers to be a villain. He also rejects Lucy's offer to be his girlfriend, saying that he is not interested in romance. He rides away with the Minions and Kyle, leaving Lucy heartbroken.

The film ends with Gru and the Minions returning to their lair, where they rebuild their inventions and gadgets. Gru declares that he is proud of his Minions and that they are his family. He also reveals that he has a new plan: to steal the moon.
